Rwenzori Mountains-Climbing & Hiking Adventures in Congo
Apart from the known two active volcanoes in congo of Mount Nyiragongo &Nyamuragira, there is another climbing adventure of the snow capped mountain and hiking is done in this Jungle of Virunga national Park.
The Rwenzori Mountains, previously called the “Ruwenzori Range” and sometimes the “Mountains of the Moon”, is a mountain range of eastern equatorial Africa, located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rwenzori Mountains support glaciers and are one source of the river Nile.
These make a height of 5,109 m (16,761 ft) with very huge glaciers found on the entire continent of Africa. The visitors that will go further to hike the Rwenzori’s will encounter a variety of Flora and Fauna with different landscapes covered with alpine meadows, bamboo forests and snow capped peaks. There will also be various wild animal species like Chimpanzees, forest elephants, Okapi and birds. We advise visitors to the Rwenzori’s to visit in the months of January, March, June and late August because these are the most appropriate months to visit.
To get there, you will take a flight to Beni then a local taxi to Virunga’s Mutsora ranger station. The cost of a permit to the Rwenzori’s is $200 per trekker/climber. In case of extra costs, like booking an overnight to rest in the huts one has to pay $116 and the park is not responsible for the provision of camping gears at this point. Those wanting to climb Margherita Peak or any of the other summits will need to bring their own climbing hardware, crampons, and ice axes. Bivouc gear is also a good idea. A Virunga ranger accompanies all trekkers and climbers and independent porters are available for hire. Porters negotiate their prices on the spot, but the cost is typically less than a dollar per kilogram with a maximum of 15 kg/porter.
