Mount Nyiragongo

Mount Nyiragongo is an active strato volcano with an elevation of 3,470 metres (11,380 ft)  in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km (12 mi) north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake.

The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls – one at about 3,175 m (10,417 ft) and a lower one at about 2,975 m (9,760 ft). Nyiragongo’s lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. A maximum elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 3,250 m (10,660 ft) prior to the January 1977 eruption – a lake depth of about 600 m (2,000 ft).

How to Plan a Hike to Mount Nyiragongo Volcano.

Climbing up the Nyiragongo volcano requires one to be physically fit and those that are more fit can hike up with too much flexibility in just one day and the trails to start at Kibati patrol post which takes one only 30 minutes from the town of Goma and an hour from Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo. The time needed to reach the volcano depends on one’s physical fitness and the trails are led by park wardens with porters to help the guests carry their luggage/load up the volcano at fair prices.

The hiking usually takes about six hours to the top which sometimes makes some people sickish due to the fact that the whole hiking process starts at 1989m (6,525 ft) and rises to 3470m(11,382 ft) rapidly. When planning the hike, all visitors are advised to move with water for drinking for the entire activity is quite tiring and those with acute mountain sickness (AMS) must talk to their physicians about ways of prevention before the hike.

One’s physical fitness determines how long the hike will go/take and the most appropriate time to spot the vigorous lava lake on Mountain Nyiragongo is at night.  The hiking permit costs;
